Matthew’s Grandmother’s house was full of commotion that day, mainly because it was her ninetieth birthday. Her large network of family and friends had come to wish her many happy returns, as well as to partake in the food, fun, and company. As soon as all the guests arrived, her eldest son got onto the little stage to give a speech
“Dear friends and family. Thank your for coming to this joyous occasion. I would like to wish our dear Grandmother Many happy years ahead. Now let’s Boogie!” On that mark, the birthday party officially started.
“Come, Matthew, try my cookies! I made your favourite flavor, chocolate!” Matthew obliged, taking a cookie and relishing every bite.
“I’d like a cookie too,” said Jane, Reaching out to the plate.
The Grandmother gave Jane’s hand a smart slap, scowling” You can’t have them! They’re only for Matthew! Now get lost!”
Jane quietly slunk away, skulking. Since Matthew’s birth, Jane’s Grand mother had been openly hostile to her. Instead, she spent all her time doting on her only grandson, Matthew. Jane resented that, and hated Matthew with all her heart for ‘stealing’ her grandmother’s love from her. A plan was sparked from a dark corner of her mind. Smiling deviously, she put it into action.
Running back to her house, only two blocks away, she let herself into the empty house. Entering her room, she reached under her bed, feeling for something. “Bingo…” she echoed, as her hands felt something boxy. Quickly, she ran into Matthew’s room, letting herself in using the house master key hidden under the sofa. She quickly wrapped her present in the exact same wrapping paper as Matthew’s.
She then ran back to the party, swapping his gift with hers.
“Alright, it’s time for presents!” Someone cried. Soon, everyone crowded around Matthew’s grandmother. Naturally she picked Matthew’s present first. As soon as she opened the present, she let out a small gasp, then collapsed to the floor, clutching her heart. Those present let out a collective gasp, before rushing to her side. Jane stood at the sidelines in fear.
“Matthew, how could you…”Was all Jane’s grandmother could say before she sighed, giving away the spark of life. Released from her hands was a windup clock…
A year later, Matthew’s family had been estranged from the clan for committing the vile act of giving a clock to their grandmother. Matthew was never seen again. Some said he drowned himself in shame. Jane, who could not take the blood of two on her hands, committed suicide.
So many lives snuffed out over petty hate.
